What is Anemia ?

anemiaAnemia is a symptom of underlying conditions, such as loss of blood components, elements not adequate or lack of nutrients needed for the formation of red blood cells, resulting in decreased blood oxygen carrying capacity (Doenges, 1999).
Anemia is a term that shows a low count of red blood cells and hemoglobin and hematocrit levels below normal (Smeltzer, 2002: 935).
Anemia is reduced to below normal values of red blood cells, hemoglobin and high volume of packed red bloods cells (hematocrit) per 100 ml of blood (Price, 2006: 256).
Thus, anemia is not a diagnosis or disease, but rather is a reflection of the state of a disease or disorder of bodily functions and the fundamental changes patotisiologis described through the careful anemnesis, physical examination and laboratory information.
