The treatment showed a significantly higher survival neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer – in laboratory tests, and they expect to ever be used to treat children with this disease.
The antibodies did not work so well with more aggressive tumors, but researchers then one of them accompanied with a peptide, a protein fragment-specific, and together they destroyed between 40 and 60 percent of these tumors.
These antibodies are designed to acknowledge the response of the immune system and stimulating it, making more effective their attack cancer cells, the researchers said. It is hoped that these antibodies can be used to reinforce or ‘overload’ the body’s immune system to help fight cancer. Although this work is still in a pre-clinical phase, we hope that we have identified a way that I can offer an effective treatment for neuroblastoma immunotherapy. Neuroblastoma is a cancer that affects the development of nerve tissue and accounts for 15 percent of cancer deaths in children. About 60 percent of children with neuroblastoma can be cured with chemotherapy But for those children who do not respond well to this treatment, immunotherapy could become a vital new treatment option.
Immunotherapy is a relatively new form of treatment, but several monoclonal antibodies – proteins made as it can detect proteins attached to cancer cells and can be used to stop their growth – are already approved to treat adult cancers.
