We always believe that “it is up to others but to me or my loved ones, no.” What happens when we have to ourselves?

All around us we hear the same thing has died of cancer this or that or they are giving chemotherapy or the like. Seldom thought we going to play even though the disease and any of its types is the most prevalent is in society.

Receiving the news changes our lives, although they have to end it. We can always follow more or less as usual.

It is easy to say but the last thing we must do is master the panic. Think we’ll be able to do past life in almost all times, except for medical treatment that we assigned. Not all cancers are the same, thus, treatments either.

You’ll have to sleep and rest more than before, though. You should also change your diet for a much lighter and healthier. Leave the smokers and snuff if you go to check-ups hoping to be touched.

When you complete your treatment, it is time to think again, return to the previous life. But while do not miss any appointments. Do not let the disease go to the fore. On the contrary, leave out but forget it until you heal, be there.

Gradually increase your confidence and the day of discharge without further revisions to do. If many people get it, why you will not get you too?

The research was based on a population of 1,525 women who underwent fibrocolonoscopy, and hence they are classified by age, smoking history, family history of colorectal cancer and body mass index. Obesity was established as a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30.

The results showed that of all polyps detected was the fifth of patients with a BMI over 30. Of the patients with neoplasia 20% were obese. The study also compared to obesity and smoking as risk factors, most significant being the first variable.

Based on these results highlight the importance of obese women reduce their BMI as a way to prevent colorectal cancer. Especially considering that in Western societies constantly increasing number of obese women.

The advantage of the fecal immunochemical test (FIT), which can be carried out annually compared to colonoscopy, which is carried out every ten years as a preventive measure is that it offers more opportunities for abnormalities, the researchers led by Branden Manns.

For the study, whose results were published in the online edition of the journal PLoS Medicine (November 2010, Volume 7), we used data from two groups of people between 50 and 64 and 65 to 75, which had a risk average of developing colorectal cancer.

According to statistics cited by the German agency DPA, if no preventive examinations are conducted 4,857 100,000 people suffer from colorectal cancer, of which 1,782 will die from the disease, whereas if they submit annually to FIT the numbers could drop to 1,393 patients and 457 deaths .

However, although new immunological tests more accurately detect anomalies, at present still yield many false positives.

Another area of research in colon cancer prevention lies in the relationship between this disease and vitamin D. Researchers at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) has published a paper in the British Medical Journal, which has involved more than half a million people.

In the study, we analyzed vitamin D levels in blood and the number of people who developed colon cancer. The conclusions are clear: people with higher levels of vitamin D showed a 40% lower risk of colon cancer.

LACK OF VITAMIN D AND METASTASIS

Autonomous University of Madrid, has found a possible link between vitamin D and tumor development. A paper published in the Journal of Cell Biology explains that vitamin D may help prevent cancer in two ways.First, is activating genes that encode the E-cadherins, proteins involved in cell junctions and are linked to tumor development because its absence facilitates cell migration. This fact leads to an increase in the number of metastases (reproduction or extension of tumor to another part of the body). Secondly, vitamin D inhibits several proteins involved in the activation of the cytoskeleton, a set of polymers required for cell division and migration of metastasis. If it crashes the cytoskeleton of cancer cells, prevents these can be split and moved.

Bacteria involved

Researchers from John Hopkins University (USA) has discovered a bacterium that could be implicated in the development of colon cancer. The study is published in the journal Nature Medicine.

Scientists say that “Bacteroides fragilis, which can cause gastroenteritis, and boxes that are located in the intestines of children and adults around the world, is also responsible for some cases of this tumor.Higher levels of vitamin D in blood are associated with a lower risk of colon cancer

For the study, the bacteria were infected with various mutant mice a gene called APC, which is related to tumor development. Within a short time, animals had diarrhea and inflammation of the colon. In one week, the diarrhea disappeared but the swelling persisted and formed small tumors. A month later, the mice had developed cancer.

On the other hand, another group was treated mouse with a nontoxic strain of the same bacteria and the result was that the mice did not develop diarrhea or no tumors. The authors believe that the bacterium causes an inflammation of low level but persistent in the digestive tract. Thus, over time, the genetic material in epithelial cells may be damaged and cause tumor development.

Colorectal cancer is the second largest tumor incidence and higher mortality rates in Spain, behind lung cancer in males and breast cancer in women. But there are factors that help prevent it. Avoid alcohol and snuff, eating a balanced diet and an active life up the list.

13,101 people in 2006 died from colorectal cancer, a figure representing 12.9% of total cancer deaths during that year. This is one of the main conclusions of a study published in the journal European Journal of Cancer Prevention’.

The research analyzes the causes of these inequalities and seek a possible relationship to changes in diet (red meat, fish, vegetables) in the alcohol and snuff, and the exercise or sedentary. The good news is that the incidence of these tumors can be reduced. Just keep a healthy lifestyle.

Delete snuff, moderate alcohol, eating a balanced diet and avoid a sedentary lifestyle are some of the basic pillars of prevention.Alcohol and snuff primarily responsible

Among those responsible for the increase in these tumors emphasizes the consumption of snuff and alcohol. There is scientific evidence about the relationship between smoking and increased risk of developing colorectal polyps and cancer: from 12% to 21% of colorectal cancers could be attributable to smoking. “In Spain, consumption of cigarettes has increased apparent until the late eighties, with a stabilization from the late nineties” notes the study’s lead author and researcher at the University of Sevilla, Luis Maria Bejar.

Alcohol consumption also grew until the early eighties, followed later by a slow decline. Dietary habits with high consumption of red meat at the expense of a diet rich in vegetables and physical inactivity are other factors involved that stress specialists.
