Basics of colon cancer
When doctors talk about colon cancer , talk about a disease whose center is in the middle and the longest in the large intestine. While this is a common and dangerous condition can be detected easily.
On the other hand, is a disease that takes time to develop. Considering these factors, one could say that the chances of survival to the condition are many.
To this day unknown many causes of colon cancer . Anyway, among the best known and most frequently are located as follows: age over fifty years, intake of foods rich in fats and low in fiber, genetic predisposition, family history, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, obesity and diseases such as colon polyps or rectum, ulcerative colitis, breast, uterus or ovary.
As already mentioned, colon cancer takes place in the body. For this reason, it can detect symptoms like those listed below: changes in bowel habits, feeling of fullness, difficulty in bowel movements, diarrhea, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, poor appetite, fatigue, vomiting and abdominal pain.
It is important to reiterate that it is a treatable illness. Those with several of these symptoms should see a doctor so they can perform the appropriate tests.
Colon cancer diagnosis
Colon cancer has a very positive expectations if caught early. The doctor informs the person concerned about the state of the disease, its treatment, side effects of it and where to find support associations. To detect colon cancer using several techniques, such as those described below:
* Digital rectal examination. It is a physical examination the doctor performed by inserting a finger into the anus to detect abnormalities in the lower digestive tract, such as blood, abnormal growths or if the patient feels pain.
* Sigmoidoscopy. It is an exploration of introducing a tube through the anus which transmits light and image, and called an endoscope. With it you can examine the rectum and the end of the colon (60 cm), and identify some of the polyps that might be there.
* Colonoscopy. It is an exploration similar to sigmoidoscopy, but the tube used is longer and can go all the colon. Facilitates tissue sampling (biopsy) in areas suspected that there might be a tumor, and after conducting a study with a microscope. Usually done under anesthesia and the risk of complications is very low.
* Genetic study. If you have a family history or suspicion of the possibility of hereditary cancer, we recommend genetic testing for abnormalities. In case of genetic alterations in the family, initiate scans of the colon and rectum at an early age (20 years) and continue periodically.
* Proof of fecal occult blood (FOBT). It is also known by its acronym in English: FOBT, and consists of a test for blood in the stool. It has been shown that testing reduces the likelihood of death from colon cancer.
* Barium enema with double contrast. Is a series of x-rays of the colon and rectum are taken after the patient was applied a enema (enema) with a white chalky solution that contains barium to show in detail the radiological colon and rectum.
