Research shows that cancer is “an abnormal growth of cells which tend to proliferate in an uncontrolled way and, in some cases, to metastasize.” And we know that cancer is not just a disease actually a group. This growth was the name of a crab.

Any abnormal growth of tissue was appointed through the organ. For example, when the mother happened to have abnormal growth, then this will be diagnosed as breast cancer, as with the prostate, lung, skin, ovaries and so on.

We refer to a tumor or neoplasm or malignant, which means a disease that can grow and progress continually. Some people have no idea perplexed when it comes to benign tumors. A benign tumor is not as bad as you think, not cancer at all, and certainly the two types are not contagious.

On 10 December, Dr. Josep Baselga (Hospital Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona and Massachusetts in the U.S.) occupied the central lectern ‘of SanAntonio’ to communicate the results of neo-ALTTO trial. This is a coordinated effort of 24 countries in Europe, America and Asia, with a huge turnout of SOLTI, a group of researchers from spain.

The thing was to find out the effect of the combination of two drugs, trastuzumab (Herceptin) and lapatinib (Tyverb) on a particularly aggressive variety of breast cancer. Their cells are studded with a protein called HER2 that accelerates their proliferation. Each of the drugs experienced attacks that protein from a different flank but it was unknown whether the combination would be beneficial. The treatment associated with conventional chemotherapy was applied before surgery, so that its effects could be analyzed at the microscopic level after removal of tumors.

455 patients participated, 45 of them in Spain (the third largest group after Taiwan and Germany). The results could not be left open over wide the doors of this new development: more than half of the tumors treated with the combination of drugs disappeared without a trace, not even noticeable under the lens of the microscope.

This is known as complete pathological response, and is the ultimate test of effectiveness of cancer treatment. To date, more potent drugs (including trastuzumab and lapatinib, used separately), barely reached a quarter of complete responses.

The glands and the ducts are embedded in adipose tissue and connective tissue, which, together with the lymphatic tissue, form the breast.

The survival rate for breast cancer non-invasive is very good. For invasive cancers, the chances of recovery depend on the type of cancer and its stage of development when they began treatment. To learn more about the stages of cancer progression, see our fact sheet Cancer.

Various factors influence the speed at which a tumor will grow. Tests on a sample of tissue taken from the tumor will influence the choice of treatment.

The two tests performed:

* Test dose hormone receptors. Some types of breast cancers are sensitive to sex hormones – they are hormone. This means that their development can be stimulated by estrogen or progesterone.

* Test HER2. In cases of invasive cancer only, a genetic test is performed to ascertain the degree of activation of the HER2 gene. When this gene is strongly activated, this indicates that the cancer may grow more rapidly. This is where about 10% of invasive cancers.

After this period of 11 years, 385 women taking hormones developed invasive breast cancer, compared with 293 who took the placebo.

Women taking hormones were also more likely to have advanced cancer that had spread to lymph nodes, 81 women on hormones developed advanced cancer, while 43 women taking the placebo did.

And a total of 25 women died from breast cancer after taking hormones, compared with 12 women taking the placebo. This means that for every 10,000 women taking the therapy, 2.6 die of breast cancer per year, compared with 1.3 deaths per year among those not taking the therapy, the researchers said.

The results of the fight against the suggestion of some previous findings that breast cancers arising in women taking estrogen and progestin may be less severe and less likely to cause death than women not taking these hormones.

* Ductal carcinoma in situ. This is the most common type of breast cancer non-invasive in women. It is a form of cancer very “young” at the very beginning of its formation. As its name suggests, is formed inside the channels of lactating breast. It does not spread. Is diagnosed much more frequently this type of cancer for more widespread use of mammography. The treatment of this cancer leads to healing in almost all cases. Without treatment, it continues to grow and can become “invasive” and thus spread outside the ducts.

Invasive cancers

* Ductal carcinoma. It starts in the ducts. Cancer cells through the wall channels.

* Lobular carcinoma. Cancer cells appear in the lobules, and then through the wall of the lobules and are scattered in the surrounding tissues.

* Inflammatory carcinoma. A rare cancer that is characterized primarily by a breast can become red, swollen and hot. The skin of the breast may also take the form of an orange peel. This type of cancer progresses faster and is more difficult to treat.

* Other carcinomas (medullary, colloid or mucinous, tubular, papillary). These types of breast cancer are more rare. The main differences between these types of cancer based on the type of cells affected.

* Paget’s Disease. A rare cancer that manifests itself through a small wound on the nipple that does not heal.

There are several risk factors for breast cancer. However, in most cases it is impossible to explain the reasons for its occurrence in a particular person.

One in 9 women may be suffering from breast cancer in her lifetime. Men may also be affected, but rarely. Less than 1% of cases of breast cancer affecting men.

The number of patients increased slightly but steadily over the past 3 decades. For cons, the mortality rate has steadily declined over the same period, thanks to advances in screening, diagnosis and treatment.

The breast consists of fat, glands and channels (see diagram cons). The glands arranged in lobules produce milk and canals (ducts) are used to transport the milk to the nipple. Breast tissue is influenced by hormones produced by women in varying amounts throughout their life (puberty, pregnancy, lactation). These hormones are estrogen and progesterone.

Cancer indicates the presence of abnormal cells. These abnormal cells multiply uncontrollably. Cancer cells can remain in the breast or spread throughout the body by the blood or lymphatic vessels. Most of the time, the progression of breast cancer takes many months and even years.

Types of Breast Cancer

There are different forms of breast cancer, each with an evolution of its own. They can be divided into two broad categories: non-invasive cancer or in situ, which only affects the milk ducts, and invasive cancer or invasive, spreading into the fatty breast tissue. (Note, that the cancer is invasive does not mean that form metastases, but it invades the tissue around the channels).
