Eating rhubarb, a vegetable can be cooked in sweet or savory dishes, could become the basis for a new cancer treatment, since eating this food cooked for 20 minutes dramatically increased levels of cancer-fighting substances in the body. The researchers have discovered Sheffield Hallam University and the Scottish Crop Research Institute, whose findings were published in the journal Food Chemistry’.
Anticarcinogenic substances in the body increases the vegetable are called polyphenols and has been shown to selectively kill or may prevent the progression of cancer cells. Thus they can be used to develop new, less toxic treatments for this disease, even cancers resistant to other treatments. The authors of this study hope to use the project results to analyze the effects of polyphenols against leukemia rhubarb. Specifically, the goal is to find the best combination of polyphenols and chemotherapeutic agents kill cells that cause the disorder, also those who have resisted previous treatments.
It is the first time explore the benefits of rhubarb growing in British gardens, a variety grown specifically in South Yorkshire. Previous investigations have focused on the rhubarb of Oriental medicine, which it previously documented benefits and is part of traditional Chinese medicine.
According to Dr. Nikki Jordan-Mahy, Center for Biomedical Research at Sheffield Hallam University, this work has shown “that the rhubarb cultivated in Britain is a potential source of pharmacological agents that can be employed to achieve creation of new anticancer drugs. “Current treatments are not effective in all cancers and the resistance is a common problem. Suffer from cancer one in three individuals in the UK, so it is very important to discover new treatments, less toxic and can overcome the problem of resistance.
